A new study shows that Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) offers long-term relief from cervicogenic headaches.
Researchers in Australia tracked 200 individuals with cervicogenic headache. The participants were divided into four treatment cohorts: 1) SMT, 2) exercise therapy, 3) combined SMT and exercise and 4) a control group.
Participants underwent treatment for 6 weeks. Patients were asked about changes in medication use — as well as in headache frequency, intensity and duration. In addition, their progress was monitored using the Northwick Park Neck Pain Index and physical examination. [Read more →]

A new report reveals that patients suffering from migraines rack up higher medical bills than their headache-free peers.
Researchers compared the medical costs — such as hospital stays, emergency department treatments and physician visits — of approximately 1,000 migraine patients to an equal number of migraine-free controls. Subjects were on average 39 years old — two-thirds were employed and 80% were female. [Read more →]

Consuming more magnesium (Mg) may reduce tension-type headaches, according to a new review study.
Approximately 70% of tension-headache sufferers experience muscular tightness and tenderness. In the study, investigators measured serum ionized Mg2+ levels and brain intracellular free Mg2+ in patients with tension headaches. They found that subjects with muscle cramps, strains, damage and tension lacked sufficient levels of the mineral. Mg supplementation also prevented tension headache. [Read more →]
